My previous post(Aug 21st) outlines an ongoing list of 30 items that need addressing. The most important being the first ten which are for reliability and safety. These required the car to come off the road for three or four days. So Friday afternoon I came home from work and got a start.

So far we have attended to moving the fuel tank, started on the brakes, removed the engine and started restoring the cooling system as well as about four other jobs such as the tail lights and wiring. It’s very important to replace the seatbelts and get the fuel tank out of the cabin and back into the front. As I cannot source a period (59/60′) tank I have a 65 tank that is a little too big. Mick came over yesterday and did a great job of building a bracket to support it above the original spot under the bonnet. See photos.

From time to time I have the webcam running on my progress. You can access the live feed via this link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/yowiecam

This facebook album has the latest mobile uploads to facebook from my phone. http://goo.gl/0xUfK

Special thanks needs to go to Paul for helping with some painting and cleaning of the brakes. Mick also came over Saturday evening and Sunday and welded up the frame for the tank. My darling wife also helped out by supplying lunch and keeping the kids at bay.

Some images as of this post. As you can see it’s all very muddy and needs a good clean. The motor tinware was full of holes and the fins chocked with mud and oil. Should run a lot cooler once back in with the stock cooling system refitted.

So. I’m at home today with a sick son and been wanting to write this article for some time.

This is basically a run down of the front page of my iPad. Many of these apps I use daily for my teaching, administration, inspiration and own personal development. The second page is just a list of folders full of apps that either didn’t make the cut or I use less frequently. Please feel free to add your own favourite apps in the comment section below.

Calendar is synced up to Google Calendar and I use it on a daily basis. All of my timetable is repeated through calendar along with key events that have been added though memos, sms and emails. I’ve tried various todo type apps but found them to complicated or needing continuous updating of events. The calendar is a great way to priortize key events and allocate time. I simply write into the details anything that I need to follow up and it syncs with my Mac at home, Classroom (Chrome Browser) and iPhone calendar app.

Contacts come standard with the iPad. There are probably better contacts apps available but this one is the same as my iPhone and so since it is easy to use and has all my info already I haven’t changed it.

App Store is where I get my apps from and update my apps. The best way to find new and useful apps is to ask others who have the same product. Some apps like TeacherPal can be time consuming and it’s not until you ave seen them running that you can see how valuable they are. When faced with the decision of iPad or Android Tablet I almost bought a Droid Tablet. Come time to test the droid tablet out I found that it was very unstable and did not have the range or teaching / learning app yet the Apples developers currently offers. Of course this fact is changing rapidly and I suspect my next tablet PC will be Android.

Google search engine app is a very useful app to have. I did have it in a folder however I use it so regularly that it made the front page just for ease of access. I like its speech recognition but its definitely not perfect. Could be the Australian accent perhaps. Once synced with your Google account and the formalities sorted “I accept” then you can use Google Googles with has 100′s of applications within and outside of the classroom. I must admit I’ve still got my ‘L’ plates on but it is a lot of fun and students like fun things.

Camera is iPad is ok. It’s not the best camera in the world but it works. Mostly I use it to record information. Perhaps notes I have written on the board. Students doing fieldwork, profile pictures, record a classroom incident (rubbish left on a floor / writing on a desk) or just video tape a message to a blog or email. The camera is used most regularly on my iPhone as it is more portable however having facetime and the front facing camera is good for conferences and google “Hang outs”. I don’t keep a “Photos” app on my front page as you can access the photo folder from within the camera app.

WordPress is a quirky app that has its glitches. If you can you should publish from a computer but at a pinch you can easily publish from the app without too much hassle. The iPad dosen’t lend itself to a lot of writing such as an article like this one unless your a patient person or have a bluetooth keyboard. Regardless this app is used by me regularly as I maintain a number of blogs and need to make corrections on a regular basis, upload images, video or simply post an activity.

Diigo (Bookmarker) is still in beta but the beauty of this app and web 2.0 website is that when you bookmark a website using Diigo (or the Diigo app in Chrome) it automatically syncs with the Diigo app. At a pinch you can list your fav sites, make them public or private and find them again by date or by tags. I’d highly recommend that if you do choose to use Diigo be sure to include tags into your posts for easy sorting when you need that little gem again. It also helps vistors find your fav sites based on their interests.

Google Earth has limited features in comparison to the PC / Mac install from Google but it does do some cool stuff. The tilt function to oblique views are very cool and it seems to load maps much faster than the computer which is bloated with layers of add ons. You can add layers or remove them however the pinch and twist navigation from place to place makes it very intuitive in its use. It caches information well so you can load maps data and images prior to use and access them later. Wifi is the best connection to have but with patience 3g (tethered from my iPhone) works well also.

Google+ is (possibly) the next big thing. I’m proud to be a beta tester for this new Google based social network. As I check it two to three times a day this app gets quite a bit of use. Still very much in the developing stages lots of teachers are discovering Google+. Although I don’t contribute much it is very good reading. The app is very easy to use and doesn’t send heaps of push notifications.

Twitter is my hidden addiction and holds pride of place. I access it three or four times a day. It easily syncs up with the web based twitter and runs very fast. It allows easy switching between accounts and sends push notifications on replies. This is a must have app which undergoes regular updating and improvements.

Facebook does not have an app for iPad. How’s that for keeping up with the times. I don’t know who’s to answer for that but I make do with the iPhone app and 2x it. It’s grainy but works. I generally use the app to update facebook and read facebook via Flipboard. Also check out Facebook Messenger which is fairly new to the appstore.

Flipboard is a wonderful app for personal reading. It ports to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Reader and a whole range of other bookmarked sites of interests. Flipboard starts you off with a pick of the bunch but you can easily tailor the app to suit your reading. It emulates the style of flipping the pages of a good book. It’s very visual, responsive and intuitive.

Dropbox is the must have app. Lots of cloud storage at the right price. Syncs all types of document formats across all types of computers. Simple to set up and very simple to use. Dropbox is one of my favourites Web 2.0 utility for keeping my files in order. I can keep all my programs, registrations and photos up to date across all computers and now my iPad.

Geocaching is a whole nother thing. A web based outdoor activity requiring a GPS, a sense of adventure and no real plan as to how the day will unfold. Geocaching is the use of GPS to locate a hidden cache (or container) in an environment of interest. I’ve been a geocacher since 2001 and although I don’t record my finds as regularly as I’d like to its still fun to see what is in the neighbourhood.

TWiT stands for “This Week in Tech”. A web based news outlet headed by Leo Laporte. A media journalist who hosts is own studios and produces a large range technology podcasts This not only includes the iPad but Google, Tech News Today and many many other topics. With a love for all things technology I like to stay ahead of the pack and follow Leo and his teams comprehensive podcasts on news and opinions. The paid version is called TWiT Pad and it’s worth the 0.99 cents as well.

Stumble Upon for the uninitiated is a lucky dip of websites. You don’t know what your going to get but you do get to choose the subject material. Through the use of this app you discover websites that are visually enticing, engaging and rated highly amongst the web community. In other words you can tailor the stumble to find the coolest website available on the web. Download it but make sure your on holidays and you have Diigo to save them to.

HSW HD is high definition web app for the web site How Stuff Works. A fantastic bunch of web gurus who love to share information. This app is a portal to all the resources of the website. Videos, text, podcasts and animations. It can be used to help design lessons and as reference material to show you where you need to look to search further. I love listening to the “Stuff you missed in History Class” and “Stuff you need to know” podcasts.

Discover is a Wikipediea portal app to all the resources hosted on the Wikipedia platform. This beautifully crafted app does away with the rigorously formatted style of the Wiki and presents both interest based and search based information. I love this app. It does away with the rigidity of Wiki and makes learning enjoyable.

Touch LCD is just once of about 200 count down style timers, most free and most do the same thing. I haven’t tried them all. I downloaded about five and this one was the fastest of those to set in a hurry. I use them in the classroom to count down 5min reading time, a ten minute activity or 20 minutes group collaboration tasks. It does not matter which Timer you choose just as long as you have and use at least one.

Settings sits on my front page because I need to bluetooth connect my iPad to my iPhone running Personal Hotspot. If I want connectivity on the run settings allows me to tailor the brightness, pincode (after little eyes saw my last code) and desktop etc. It could just as easily be on the second page but it gets used daily and so sits where its easily accessable.

Bottom Bar:

Teacher Pal is used for every lesson. I have loaded images and details of each and every student into Teacher Pal and use it to record attendance, student marks, infractions, improvements and even parent / teacher appointments. It’s a little clunky and has very little support in the way of “How to videos” but does have a quick and dropbox backup supported database. To be honest it was the key reason I choose iPad over Android as there is not yet a Droid app of similar calibre.

Evernote is a notebook style app that allows you to store and sync record images, typed information, audio and even video notes across various platforms. Like dropbox in its portability it is a designated note taking program idea for taking down key notes and storing them. I don’t use it as much as one would think, perhaps three our four times a week but its there and works fast when I need it.

Penultimate is a writing app that allows you to scribe notes handwriting style into a page quickly and effectively. With easy file organisation and flip-style navigation its and enviable note-taking app that allows you to draw diagrams and be creative in your own handwriting using just your finger. Taking a call and can’t find a pen and paper. Easy, open Pen-ultimate and bang – write down your number.

iPod is used daily on both my iPhone and iPad. As I commute an hour to and fro work daily I love listening to TWiT and HSW (See above) along with my favourite music, internet radio and anything else that is interesting. I’m not a fan of the Apple iTunes but the iPod is a great product if you can see past that. Listening to audio books and podcasts is a fantastic way to learn and get things done like the mowing the lawns and wiping the dishes.

Safari is a nice browser. If there was Chrome for iPad I’d use that but it does what I need it to do. It would be nice if flash worked but the world according to Apple apparently I dont need it. Safari is a fast browser and although there are lots of browsers out there I’m happy with Safari as it matches my phone and does everything I need it to do.

Mail is a surprisingly compact and efficient mail app that comes with iPad. It is quick and integrates with my gmail accounts and department email. Yes I have a lot of unread emails. Mostly admail that I’m yet to set filters for.

Other Notable apps on Page 2:

App Decks – The best way to browse apps.

GeeTasksLite - If you use Google Tasks then this is a great app. There are list that sync. I like this one.

Cloud Surfer - If you like Chrome and not Safari then check this one out. Sweet tabbed interface that uses gestures.

Battery – Nice looking battery indicator that displays time to go for most applications (Browsing, Music, Games etc)

HeyTell - A fun app that sends voice packets across the net. Like SMS but with speech.

Foursquare – Don’t care who know where you are. A social network game using GPS and points based achievements.

Instagram – Great app for the photographer. Network with other budding shutter bugs and show your skills.

NextTag – Find it – Love it. Best app to find the best prices.

BT Tether – Great concept app but I can’t get it to work. Tethers with iPhone and when the range is broken an alarm sounds.

One of my many passions besides teaching, scouting and technology is my love for old cars, in particular Volkswagens.

My darling wife has been kind enough to allow me to indulge in my passion and let me purchase another old volkswagen beetle for commuting to and from work. As this is a commuting car it is essential it is reliable and safe.

My newest VW is called “The Yowie”. It’s a 63 Baja (Swing axle / Link pin). At some stage someone really loved this Baja but at present it’s a little rough around the edges. This post is simply for my own reference and a simple to do list. As you can see most points are fairly minor but essential for reliability. As I work through each one I’ll return to this post and cross it off to show my progress. My priorities are to start with the safety aspects, then mechanical and finally cosmetic / comfort. I hope to have the first two lists done within the next month. The cosmetic and comfort will be ongoing.

This Baja is a 68′ Ragtop I came across yesterday thanks to mates Anthony and Toddy contacting me with the sellers details.
Being a 68 it has disc brakes up front a twinport 1600 motor and reasonably good 12volt electrics.
So, typically all my Bajas have been named after Australian Creatures of myth. What should I name this one?

This weekend past 13 1st Rathmines Scouts attended the NSW State Scout Rally at Cataract Park, South Sydney.

Approximately 50 activities were hosted by five regional areas across Cataract Park. Leaders and parents provided a wide range of challenging activities over the course of the weekend to well over 800 Scouts.

They were judged on teamwork, leadership, achievement amongst other attributes required in Scouts.

We sent two patrols from 1st Rathmines and although there were no placings the success was in the fact that they all got along, had a lot of fun and were subjected to a range of conditions. Each night they had to pitch tents, cook food from a menu, maintain good hygiene and all while getting along with not only other in their patrol but another 150 odd scouts surrounding them.

Amenities were always close by but Scouts had to deal with carrying a pack, creating and organising a menu and meals, packing light as well as staying dry and warm whilst moving through each activity.

Patrol Leaders had to motivate patrol members throughout the weekend best plan how to get through as many activities in the time available.

Leaders and parents were very well catered for with want for nothing. Plenty of tea, coffee, milo as well as a wide range of meals and snacks through out the weekend. By Sunday morning I skipped breakfast as I couldn’t eat another thing. Now I’m going to have to spend the next month trying to loose this weight.

Organisers seemed to be old hands at this even as to the noob such as myself it seemed to go without a hitch. There were lots of people working hard (and thanklessly) behind the scenes doing scoring, traffic control, running music, errands and fetching supplies and information.

Our patrols had no idea the scale of the event until the end of the weekend when they saw it all come together for the closing ceremony and awards.

Special thanks to the patrols who were able to attend. Also the parent helpers and leaders.

Not wanting to feel useless over the weekend, I was a chaperone to my sons and their patrol friends I decided to take a few photos of the bases. I know most leaders and parents who attended would not have got time to visit the other RAC’s so I decided to take a few photos to show off what else was running. This can serve as a holistic slideshow of the weekend and idea for scout nights and regional rallys.

Disclaimer: Where possible I have tried to show scouts taking part in the activities. Should individual scouts (or families / groups) wish me to take down any images please email or twitter me.

Awesome Weekend!

Thank you to all who organised and attended.

Good Job!

Choice theory – It’s not rocket science.

Life is more like Poker than Snakes & Ladders. Ultimately we are a result of the choices we make and we play the hand were given.

Yes it is true to some degree a lot of who we are has a lot to do with our environment of our childhood. Our school, our parents influences, cultural and peer impression made upon who we are but all that said and done these give us the tools to stop and think when faced with right and wrong. What is acceptable and what is not in this and other societies. If we make it through adolescence then the choices we make from then on are our own. But what encourages us to make the right choices? I can only share my own experiences. Perhaps at the end you might like to share your own in the comments.

I am a man of parallel pasts and as a result I see where I am and where I could have been if it weren’t for key decisions in my late teens. I made some very key decisions that got me to where I am today. A successful teacher with a nice home, family and opportunities. An explanation.

My Background:

As a young man I grew up in an environment of duality. A split home from the age of twelve moving all over the country up until then and growing up in to homes. A different school in my early childhood ment I made friends easily, I was outspoken, confident and willful. Thats reporting code for disruptive and annoying on class. My weekly environment was with my Dad which ensured my education had a good foundation. Weekends with my Mum helping her run her cleaning business. Through the week I had Scouting, Karate and various sports like football and swimming. On the weekend I had access to horses, motorbikes, hundreds of acres to set fire to and lots of machinery to drive. I was surrounded with opportunities and yet filled with anger and confusion from my parents violent divorce. I could have gone either way as my mates were varied. Luckily those that were into drugs I kept clear of as I saw myself entering the army or police service. But why? What was the key reason for me not hanging with that influence? Why was I looking to a career and keeping out of trouble. This article is about Choice Theory but with particular reference to my story growing up.Because of some key decisions, pivotal decisions then I am where I am today, happy, successful and enjoying life.

One bad apple spoils the wine.

Throughout school I had many positive and empowering teachers. However there was one whos words cut deep and held me back the most. An English teacher who delighted in calling me a ‘fish’ and not in a nice way. He was a tyrant and unforgiving in his verbal rants about my status as an inhuman example of what is possible through modern science. An avid meathead footballer who relished in bullying those who were confident in themselves and outspoken. Gradually over the year he hammered me down from being able to take on the world to barely believing I could even hold down a job after school. Fortunately I only had him for a year but the seed was sown. After graduation in 1991 I failed year 12 (you guessed it, English) and barely made it into the Army Reserve. The training was excellent and my self esteem returned. When not playing weekend warrior I held down various casual job and travelled.

Three and a half years passed and I knew I could be successful in the world I was in. My English teacher was wrong. I was not all the things he claimed I was. I was successful in all my jobs, confident in my role as a soldier and started working as a security officer in preparation for entering the police service. I resigned from the military and quickly started teaching security operatives for the company I worked for. My energy, personality and communication skills came to the fore and made me a valuable employee.

Bouncing Back:

Long story short I returned to high school as a 23 year old to achieve my pass in English and gain a Tertiary Entrance Result, class of 1998. With my eyes set on becoming a Police Officer I returned to Year 12 and worked weekend doing security in a minesite and continued to train officer in the evenings when required. If I needed a day off I wrote myself a note and had a day off school. I wore a uniform to fit in with my cohort and completed all the notes, assessments and activities required of me. A friend suggested I would make an excellent teacher and I though it would make an excellent fallback career should I either not get into the service or grow tired of policing. When asked by a police officer why I wanted to join the service I explained I wanted to help kids, particularly young males in difficulty homes. That officer said to me that if that was the case I should become a teacher. They have far more opportunity and influence to help a youth in need of support than any police officer.

Graduating I moved from Central Queensland to Newcastle to attend University with my fiancee, dog and soon to be in-laws. In my first week of Uni I sold my motorbike for a car, moved into a home, started a new job and had our first son (Feb 1999).

I decided to complete my degree (B.Teach / BA (Social Sciences) majoring in Geography and minoring in Performing Arts. I completed every elective I could including Aboriginal Leadership an Education, Management, History, Gifted Education and Special Education. I fell in love with Teaching.

The aim of sharing this is not to suggest that one bad teacher can have such a significant impact but that making good choices is just as important as any education system. Choice Theory is fairly simple. Their are Ten axioms of Choice Theory but I only want to focus discuss the first two:

1. The only person whose behavior we can control is our own.
2. All we can give another person is information.

The rest is just psychological babble. (Click here for more)

It’s as simple as that. We cannot control other peoples behaviours. We can only control our own. We have very little influence in what other people do around is. The only way we can influence others behaviour is through information. Giving anecdotes, comparisons, metaphors and any other elements of information to help another make the right choices.

As a youth many opportunities became available to me. I’m sure this is still true today. The opportunity to smoke, take drugs, steal cars, break into houses and rock roofs. Why didn’t I accept any of these. The information I had coming from those around me:

Scouting Leaders

Karate Sensei’s

School Teachers

Parents and Family Friends

Swimming & Football Coach

Community members (Rotary, Lions, Lioness)

When ever an opportunity to cross over the rails presented itself I pictured the disappointment, embarrassment and shame from these significant people in my life. I wasn’t an angel. I still snuck into the drive-in. Rode motorbikes down country roads and shot ducks down the river for stew but these were just typical boy activities not likely to land me in gaol.

My Point:

So as a parent, as a teacher, as a member of the community we all need to take an interest in our youth and young adults and let them know we care. We respect them. We have expectations of them to know between right and wrong and make good choices when faced with opportunities to do the wrong thing. Young people need to be modeled the courage to stand up against those they seek acceptance from. That it can be cool to be successful and an achiever.

Recently a parent shared with me concerns about who her son was sitting near and wanted my assurance I would sit them apart in class. She used a saying I hadn’t heard in years. “I you lie down with dogs you’ll wake up with fleas.” Now I clearly recall my towns Grumpy Senior Sargent (Stumpy) O’Neill sharing that exact same advice with me when I was a kid. From that day on I was very careful who I called friend. Good information helps us to make good choices. It’s not rocket science. it’s just needs to come from a good, connected network so it validated and shared regularly.

My plan for social networking.

Facebook – Edmodo – Twitter – Google+

1) Facebook (Close friends & family) – Private.

As with departmental policy and also my own personal viewpoint, Facebook is my own personal network to remain in touch with close friends and family. I’ve never had any interest in forming any type of network in Facebook with students. My Facebook time is a private and relaxing time and I entertain no interest in having students asking me questions in a closed medium.

2 ) Edmodo (Semi-formal Student Networking) – Private

I feel Edmodo is a much better closed, private social network for students. A cut down version which is more facebook than moodle, Edmodo is very easy to use and fully featured with the usual video, audio, text, links and notifications. A very refined and pointed system designed especially for student teacher and teacher to teacher relationships. Edmodo has the ability to monitor student use and assignment delivery and submission. A very good platform.

3) Twitter (Professional Development & Discussion) – Public

I have found Twitter to be the best professional development tool. Not only am I networked with 1000′s of other teachers around the globe but there is an ongoing conversation of professionalism, education reform, technology use and best pedogical practice. I have had students contact me directly through twitter however this is usually the domain of my adult peers who like myself like to share resources and discuss those little wins and losses.

4) Google+ (General Discussion)

After a week of playing around I find Google+ the middle ground between Twitter and Facebook. I’m not completely certain but I envisage Google+ having the privacy of facebook and yet the networking of twitter. I very nuch doubt students will migrate to Google+ and Edmodo so a decision will need to be made as to which one would best work with student networking. I believe Google+’s ‘Hangouts’ are not enough of a drawcard for students. If that was the case they would all be on Skype. Not new technology. It’s just new that it’s integrated.

In conclusion one of these four will have to go. Twitter is here to stay. I like the minimalistic, constrictive, immeadiate nature of Twitter and how fluid it is. I can neglect it for a week and come back as if nothing has changed. It asks nothing of me and yet its always giving. You can’t help but share. It has time for me when I have time for it but it doesn’t hate me for neglecting it during five weeks of writing reports and completing registrations.

I’ve had a facebook hiatus for the last month and really enjoyed the break. It has allowed me to focus on what is important and re-evaluate the tech aspects of my life. I find the relationships I have on Facebook very valuable even though the content does not interest me as much. Photos of peoples dinner, where they went shopping and who’s just broken up with who does not interest me as much as the magic of open source software, syncing a calendar with my phone and the latest app to integrate my teaching with teachnology I can use in (and out of) the classroom. For this reason I’ll keep a cut down version of facebook for those who don’t have Google+ yet.

Finally I think Edmodo will be the one that struggles to keep relevance in my network list. It’s a great interface but student uptake is very poor. Of the 120 students I’ve introduced to edmodo I can safely say I only have 6 that have regularly used it.Regularly being twice a week. I feel if I introduced Google+ to my students, the sheer fact is so much more similar (in features) to facebook than edmodo that students will, like myself use facebook as a personal network and Google+ as their educational portal. Only time will tell. Watch this space.

Other tools I would highly recommend:

Diigo – Dropbox – Gmail - WordPress

5) Diigo (Bookmarking)

I use Diigo for shared bookmarking and find it very a useful aspect of my teaching. With resources like twitter I use the chrome browser to open twitter links of interest and if I find value in what I’m reading I immeadiately bookmark the page within Chome using the Diigo app. After tagging and a short description these each become searchable by tags and a linear display.

6) Dropbox (Storage)

If you don’t have a dropbox you need to sort it asap. It’s a fantastic tool for storing key documents you may use across a range of laptops, desktops, phones and whatever else you have connected to the web. This is cloud storage at it best and its free. It’s easy, effective and has both public and private aspects for your documents. You can have a public folder available to the World Wide Web and your own which syncs immeadiately to each computer you’ve connected to Dropbox. The first 2gig is free so after you’ve read this article try it out today.

7) Gmail (Email)

If your hanging onto your hotmail, yahoo and live mail then don’t bother sweeping away the cobwebs. I used to be a yahoo advocate but when Google upped their storage to 1gig per inbox and promised you’d never have to delete an email again I took it as a personal challenge. I’ve had my email for 7 or 8 years now and never had to delete an email. Before dropbox I save everthing into my gmail with the tags in the subject making it a searchable storage device. With the advent of GoogleDocs (shared spreadsheets, word precessing, Calendar that syncs and bookmarking to name a few there is really no equlivant.

 WordPress (Personal Reflection)

Edublog – Blogger – WordPress - Wikispaces

I have a huge number of wordpress sites. Some for teaching, some for my hobbies and some just because I can. I’m not addicted I just have a problem thats stopping me from smoking and drinking. I’m not the best at writing but avoiding it is not going to make me improve. By writing and posting images I can be creative all while reflecting on my teaching and technology. Creating a wordpress is easy however the hard part is coming back and writing regularly. I used to try and have one wordpress per interest but since I’m a multidimensional character I find it easier to just write about everything in the one place and categorise the posts.

9) What would you add (______________)

Please comment below with the technology you use to make life just that much better. Remember, when your at a computer your away from those you love so you need to make it valuable and it must make life more productive. This age of technology is to make our life better and connect us, not take us away from those things that are the most valuable.
